Inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone, the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots” was simultaneously released in 2,126 movie theaters worldwide. It is said to be the widest released for an Indian movie, ever. It’s out of control success, such that it is now recording repeat audiences is no surprise for the producer Vinod Chopra.

“Response has been overwheling from all over the world,” he said, adding that feedback from early showings had indicated that the movie was heading for a big success.

“3 Idiots,” is based on the story of three friends  from small villages in India and their experiences at engineering college.

Two friends [R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] begin a journey to find a missing friend. Their search takes them through the perilous jungles of Shimla, Manali, Ladakh, and at the same time they begin a soul searching journey of their own as they race to find they friend the indomitable free-spirited Rancho (Aamir Khan), who had greatly impacted their lives.

It tells the story of their naughty school days and the romance between Rancho and Pia (Kareena Kapoor) and his clash with his mentor, Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani). And then one day Rancho suddenly disappeared.

Then the questions arose. Who really was Rancho? Where did he come from?

Why did he disappear so suddenly? The friend who had influenced and inspired them to become independent and  had shown them how high they could soar academically, even when everyone else referred to  them as three idiots. And begin the search for the third idiot.

Screenplay writers Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and screenplay associate Vidhu Vinod Chopra narrate a story that’s straight out of life. A story that each one of us can relate to or identify with.
