Diversity Visa Lottery Deadline November 30

Canada, India and Pakistan are among 21 countries exempted from the Department of State’s DV-2011 Diversity Visa lottery for having sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States of America in the last five years.

The other countries are: Brazil, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam. People born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible to enter. Each country receives seven percent of the available DVs.

In one month entries for the DV-2011 Diversity Visa lottery will close. Last day for application is Monday November 30, 2009. All entries must be submitted electronically before noon, Eastern Standard Time.

Applicants are asked to apply through www.dvlottery.state.gov website only. Hard copy entries will not be accepted and people applying twice will be disqualified. Applicants are to fill out the Form DS-5501, Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form and are warned not to wait until the last week to apply as the rush to beat the deadline may cause website delays.

The congressionally mandated program offers 55,000 Diversity Visas annually under the Department of State’s Immigration and Nationality Act and is open to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States of America. Applicants must meet simple but strict eligibility requirements.

The electronic registration system started with DV-2005  to make the DV process more efficient and secure. The Department utilizes special technology and other means to identify application fraud and those who submit multiple entries.

Those who qualify and have not yet applied are asked to do so and to follow the instructions on the website. There is no fee for applying. Photo instructions are also listed on the website.
